How to type your family
Each line is one family: the parents first, then a colon, then the children. Join two parents with a plus sign. Separate children with commas. Dates go in brackets after a name, as a year or a span, and a dash between years is fine.
Rosa Lim (1931–2018) + Henry Tan (1929–2001): Mei, Daniel, Grace Mei Tan (1958) + Arjun Pillai (1955): Priya, Kiran
The second line joins the first because “Mei” on line one and “Mei Tan” on line two are the same person: a first name on the child line is enough, as long as only one child is called that. A person with no partner takes a line alone: “Grace Tan (1965): Jonah”. A couple with no children listed is just “Ana + Ben”. Lines that start with # are notes and are not drawn.
A worked example
The family on this page when you arrive is invented: Rosa and Henry at the top, their three children with their partners, and the grandchildren under them, four generations and 18 people. Because it is wider than it is tall, the preview chose a landscape poster; choose Portrait to see the difference. Replace the lines with your own family and the poster follows as you type.
What you get
After paying you make the files on your own device: a PDF in the size you chose, a PDF holding all five sizes (18 × 24, 24 × 36, 16 × 20 and 11 × 14 inches, and A2 (which also prints well at A3 and A4)), a 300 dpi picture of the chosen size for print shops that want a picture, and a tall picture for a phone screen. The PDFs are true vector files, so they print sharp at any size. Print at home at 100%, or upload to any print shop or framing site: the sizes are the ones frames come in.
Why a maker and not a template
A blank family tree template costs a few dollars and leaves the drawing to you: fitting 20 names into fixed boxes, in a design program, by hand. A hand-drawn tree from an artist usually costs far more and takes days of messages. This maker sits in between: it lays the tree out for you, in a minute, from the names you type, and it never sees them. If the result is not what you hoped, the refund is yours within 30 days.
The poster costs US$12.99, once. Everything on this page before the buy button is free to try, with a preview watermark. There is also a sound wave poster, drawn from a recording or a song, for US$9.99, and a crossword gift from your clues for US$8.99. Selling to your own customers? See for sellers.
Questions about the family tree poster
How do I type my family?
One family a line: the parents, a colon, then the children with commas between them, like “Rosa + Henry: Mei, Dan”. Put dates in brackets after a name. When a child on one line becomes a parent on a later line, use the same name on both (a first name on the child line is enough) and the two lines join into one tree.
What if someone married twice?
This first version draws one family line per person, with one partner beside them. Put all of a person’s children on that one line, or make two posters, one for each marriage.
Can both sets of grandparents be on one poster?
Not in this version: it draws a couple under one set of parents, so when both partners are children of lines above, the maker says so instead of drawing them twice. Leave one side’s parents off, or make two posters, one for each side.
How many people fit?
Up to 60 people and about seven generations. Past 40 people the names get small on the smaller print sizes; the preview says how big the names will print.
What do I get, and how do I print it?
A PDF in the size you chose and a PDF with all five sizes, a 300 dpi picture of the chosen size, and a phone picture. Print the PDF at 100% (“actual size”) at home, or upload it to any print shop; the sizes are the common frame sizes.
Can I change the names after paying?
Yes. The download page holds the same boxes as this page. Fix a spelling, add a baby or change the look, and make the files again, as often as you like. Bookmark the page: its link keeps working.
Where do my family’s names go?
Nowhere. The tree is drawn in your own browser, and the files are made there too. When you pay, our server and Stripe learn only the product. The names are kept in your browser’s own storage so the download page can find them when you come back.
Can I get my money back?
Refunds: 30 days, no questions asked. Email us within 30 days of buying and we refund you in full.
